Craftivism

Craftivism is an Arnolfini/Relational contemporary art project that responds to the resurgent interest in craft as it relates to socially- engaged art practice. It involves fourteen projects developed by artists and collectives that work with craft-based traditions and activist practices, and who employ the tactics of 'craftivism' (combining crafting + activism) to question and disrupt the prevailing codes of mass consumerism.... Monsieur Morin: For A Complex Thought Ethic

To meet Monsieur Morin is not something to be taken lightly. Even those who do not know him could not but be fascinated by his old Frenchman-like elegant ways and his ringed fingers. And I believe in his success. The husky voice with which the Monsieur expresses himself, never as an intellectual but more like the chief of a tribe who tells myths and stories, immediately creates empathy and takes you into an intellectual dimension with layered dimensions: that of complex thought. And it is immediately clear that complex thought, in the presence of the old philosopher, is not just a mix of methods, an intellectual practice, but the exercising of an existential operation, a human opening that has this objective: to give itself a new founding ethic, the ethic that a planetary consciousness needs.... Nuclear Art & Radioactivity

Nuclear power is re-emerging as a concern for our times, both as a generator of energy and as part of a defence strategy. Today it seems to stand for the failed utopian promises of modernism and a fresh hope for a carbon-free future. The contradictions that lie at its core have provided a rich source of questioning for artists, scientists, ecologists and activists for many years. The Nuclear exhibition explores these intricacies through two new commissioned works by Chris Oakley and Simon Hollington & Kypros Kyprianou. ... READ MORE...

New Educational Models: The Amazing Ciid Institute

I have been in Copenhagen for two months and I haven't seen anything yet: no museums nor exhibitions. It's not that Copenhagen is that big, nor that public transport is inefficient, we are talking about the extremely well-run capital of Denmark; the reason why is that I spend all my time at school. The Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) is a project recently set up by Simona Maschi and Heather Martin. In collaboration with the Danish Design school (DKDS), the CIID offers a year long, intensive master in Interaction Design to a very limited number of students. The educational activity is now in its second year and it is supported by a research laboratory and a consultancy which has contacts with private companies. The program has links with various companies which cooperate with the students and provide research briefs based on the reality of the market.... READ MORE...

Reff/rewf. Short Chronicle Of A Contagion

For loyal readers of this magazine, REFF is not new: this symbol perhaps resonates in their ears like an echo family and it is plausible that they may know some or all the story behind it. Me ripercorriamola together in his milestones (1). REFF going to RomaeuropaFakeFactory. REFF is the fake version of (almost) namesake Romaeuropa Web Factory, a competition launched in January 2009 by Telecom Romaeuropa Foundation to support digital creativity.... READ MORE...

Stelarc’s Extrabody: The Technologic Chimera

Art concepts and techniques should always be avant-garde, and serve as an approach to men's comprehension as well as an anticipation of what they will be and how they will behave. In light of that assumption, Stelarc, who is a pioneer of extreme performances and of performances helped by interactive robotic systems and virtual reality, represents without a doubt an important reference point for all those who want to deal with an artistic project which uses technology as a means of expression.... In The Beginning Was Cybernetics. Relation Between Science & Artists

What relationship is there between digital art and cybernetic science? Surely more than one can imagine. The concept of the system, the research of process patterns, the importance of interconnections and the relationship between system and environment (be it a machine or living organism), the centrality of information, the phenomenon of retroaction and self-management, the importance of code, are the terms of cybernetic research, but it could also be said that this is true for the research of any artist who works with new technologies.... Second International Conference for Image Science

The increasing number of new technical and social possibilities to produce and distribute visual material - from YouTube, Flickr to other virtual spaces - demonstrates more and more the demand for strengthening visual competencies. On that basis the credo of the conference Gazing into the 21st Century, which brought together American experts on image science like Felice Frankel, Barbara Stafford or Michael Naimark with German representatives like Marie-Luise Angerer, Oliver Grau or Nikolaj van der Meulen et al., was dedicated to the inventory, classification and historiography of the latest worlds of images in the domains of publicity, art, entertainment and science....
