Video Art

Nathaniel Mellors Ourhouse

For the exhibition "Ourhouse", De Hallen Haarlem co-commissioned a new video series and animatronic sculptures by Nathaniel Mellors (Doncaster, 1974). In recent years Mellors has developed an experimental practice in which video, sculpture, performance and critical writing are combined. The complex relationship between language and power is a recurring theme in his multi-faceted body of work, typically manifesting itself in absurdist, humorous narratives which reveal a penchant for satire and the grotesque.... Artland Tales from the forest

An exhibition about the forest in the outskirts of our consciousness; the forest of our memories and fantasies. We spend less and less time in the forest and sometimes it appears as unreal or even frightening. Many people prefer to spend their time in virtual worlds where they feel safely connected to others. We experience nature on the television where it doesn't smell, feel or taste at all. Yet, the woods and the trees have a powerful symbolic force and meaning.... READ MORE...

Urban Images Symposium

To connect with the rest of the world, we invest a certain amount of trust in various relations. Trust is by default an ambiguous notion, it is one grounded in good faith as much as in doubt. As individuals we not only have these relations to our fellow citizens, but also increasingly with modes of connection. With proliferating forms of media, information comes to us in many guises, and the message is more and more opaque; marketing poses as friendship, solitude as community, populism as democracy.... A native of Toronto, 'funny man' Jeremy Bailey is a visual artist working primarily in electronic media who has been described by Filmmaker magazine as 'a one-man revolution on the way we use video, computers and our bodies to create art' and as often confidently self-deprecating in offering hilarious parodies of new media vocabularies (Marisa Olson, Rhizome). Loop Barcelona. Transversal Video Art

Once upon a time there was a peripheral artistic practice scarcely considered called video art. This could probably be the incipit of any dissertation on artistical practices tied to technology developments. As we know, the world of arts shares since ever a long common boundary with the world of technologies, but nowadays video art - though maintaining some innovative features - has departed from this frontier positioning itself among the artistic disciplines currently most demanded, valued and practiced....
