Synthesis: Processing and Collaboration

Across their careers, Dan Sandin and Tom DeFanti have invented entirely new ways of how mediation operates - extending its ability of recording through processing and into a synthesis of new possibilities. This has taken place through an ongoing process of collaboration where a synthesis of art, engineering and science developed pioneering methods that would influence the creation of the field of new media art.... Carsten Nicolai + Marko Peljhan Polar M (Mirrored)

The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] presents polar m [mirrored], a brand new installation piece. Carsten Nicolai and Marko Peljhan, two artists who keep operating on the international stage, team up once every ten years for a collaborative investigation into the state, concept and informational environment of the ever-transforming "earth as environment" in the respective age. Part of this long-term project, this exhibition proposes a new understanding of human existence and living environments as formulated by the artists in the year 2010.... READ MORE...

The ADA Symposium

The 7th ADA Network Symposium examines the relationship between energy and information in media arts. We ask how sustainable is the technology that supports media art? What new forms of practice are developing at the intersection of energy conservation and produc...tion, technology, and art? And how can we balance a global arts practice with the ethical complexities of global air travel, and the social complexities of remote participation?... READ MORE...

Alter Nature: We Can

Celebrating the 30 years of the Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti – New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, NABA, and as part of our blueprint program aimed at exploring the relations among culture, art and technologies, the PhD Program of the Planetary Collegium's M-Node and the NABA School of Media Design & New Media Art, in collaboration with NoemaLab are organizing a 3-day meeting on December 16 – 18, 2010, in Milan @NABA to challenge, foresee and debate in a subversive, non linear, anarchic and non academic free way, future strategies and forms of education in Media, Art & Design and the role of the research and production spaces for artists and creative professionals working with technologies.... Necessity Or Taboo. How To Evaluate Art & Science Projects

Scientists and communicators are more and more persuaded that divulgating science to the public and involving outsiders into it is a duty rather than a choice. In order to make science is necessary to use a various range of tools: from a pen and a sheet where to draw sketches, write notes and create mental maps, to the utilization of the most advanced technology. The sciences that more evidently and more closely concern the human body, such as genomics and neurosciences, are searching for more effective ways to communicate and involve people.... READ MORE...

Interruptive Site-specificity In Contemporary Digital Art

This article presents an investigation into the ways through which the notion of interruptive site-specificity is manifested and explored in digital art. This investigation is carried out through tracing early influential shifts in how artists have been working with site-specific virtual environments. Myron Krueger's Glowflow (1969) and Jeffrey Shaw's Virtual Museum (1991) are discussed as the relevant representative cases.... READ MORE...

Nathaniel Mellors Ourhouse

For the exhibition "Ourhouse", De Hallen Haarlem co-commissioned a new video series and animatronic sculptures by Nathaniel Mellors (Doncaster, 1974). In recent years Mellors has developed an experimental practice in which video, sculpture, performance and critical writing are combined. The complex relationship between language and power is a recurring theme in his multi-faceted body of work, typically manifesting itself in absurdist, humorous narratives which reveal a penchant for satire and the grotesque.... Synthetic Aesthetics International Salon

Synthetic Aesthetics is a research project run by the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and Stanford University, California. Synthetic biologists, like many engineers, are concerned with 'design'. By instigating new collaborations between synthetic biologists, designers, artists, and social scientists, we are exploring the shared territory between synthetic biology and creative practice.... Machfeld Conceptual Media Art

MACHFELD is an entity that practices media art and is defined conceptually. As such, it introduces autonomy into the art space and acts independently from its creators. Condition for the MACHFELD is the conceptual work of its operators (Sabine Maier and Michael Mastrototaro) which is obliged to the process-oriented interacitve systems in traditional art from which it has grown.... Dream Addictive. Designing A Sound Ecology

Dream Addictive is a collaborative project in the context of the relationship between art and technology, founded back in 2003 in Tijuana, Mexico by Carmen González and Leslie García, both with a solid background in the field of applied sciences, physical computing, visual programming and independent hardware production. These elements made them particularly sensitive to the development of artistic works in interaction design, highlighting the possible dialogue between the reality of the audience and the simulation provided by the machines.... Smart Urban Stage Intervista a Paolo Mataloni

Technesexual Interface. Erotic Mixed Reality Performance

Biometric sensors, made cheaply available by do-it-yourself (DIY) prototyping platforms such as Arduino, allow a shift away from visual interfaces to proprioceptive interfaces, away from the touch of a finger and towards a more internal, embodied form of sensing. One possible effect of this shift is away from the command-control methodology which was a historical basis for cybernetics, and towards a form of modulation and cooperation akin to intersubjectivity.... Science And Mind. Mikael Metthey’s Interaction Design

Within the current context of critique and practical artistic activity, predominantly based on now well entrenched mechanisms of expression pivoted on subversion, destruction of rules, rough and direct exposition of the violent attacks against both the artistic and social status quo, French-born 27-year.old interaction designer Mikael Metthey, structures his own critical speech along wider periphrases....
