Notes on the Un-documentary. Vision – Rapresentation – Ricreation

This article is the result of a series of theoretical discussions coming out from my research in the cinema-documentary field. These lines are meant to suggest a broader lecture of documentary-making activity. Through the relations that the idea of documentary establishes with photography, fiction, identity and performance, I would like to deconstruct its meaning and make it a source of philosophical research, opening discussions about technical matters that lead to new styles and methods of realization.... Public 2.0: The Era of information openess

In recent years significant changes in the technological, social and media landscapes have redrawn relationships between cultural producers of all stripes and the people previously called readers, audiences and users. In parallel with this, unprecedented amounts of information have entered the public domain as a result of both top-down policy pressures and 'bottom-up' social activism. This process in turn has given birth to new cultural movements, opportunities for creativity, forms of information visualisation, and modes of content production.... READ MORE...

Collect the WWWorld

Collect the WWWorld. The Artist as Archivist in the Internet Age sets out to demonstrate how the Internet generation is implementing and developing a practice started in the Sixties by Conceptual Art, and further developed in subsequent decades in the forms of Appropriation Art and postproduction: the practice of exploring, collecting, archiving, manipulating and reusing huge amounts of visual material produced by popular culture and advertising. Collect the WWWorld is an attempt to show how art responds to the information society.... READ MORE...

Transmediale: thematic call for works

The 2012 edition of transmediale takes place in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, 31 January – 5 February 2012 exploring the theme of in/compatible. tm.12 postulates that incompatible beings drive the logic of contemporary cultural production. We understand in/compatible beings as aesthetic things and processes that do not necessarily connect on the terms we are used to. The festival wants to raise the question of what happens when such incompatible beings are brought to the fore rather than hidden away in the dark underbelly of digital culture?... READ MORE...

Media Adventures In Belgrade. The Share Conference

Things are happening in Belgrade. This historic city sitting at the junction of the Danube and Sava rivers is throwing off a troubled past and with the enthusiasm of its young population, is striving to create a dynamic and media savvy cultural hub. The SHARE Conference, held in early April 2011 is an example of the entrepreneurism that appears to be taking hold in this rapidly emerging creative environment.... READ MORE...

On April 14, 2011 the Italian activist Vittorio Arrigoni, member of the International Solidarity Movement, was kidnapped in Gaza. Author of the book 'Gaza. Paolo Cirio. When Stealing Becomes Art

The engineer figure described by Walter Benjamin reminds the 'tactical' art by Paolo Cirio, who contributes to transform the meaning of the artistic practice from within, by unveiling the unsolved knots in the art field. Through his artworks, Paolo Cirio (http://www.paolocirio.net) intervenes tactically locating some plugs of a puzzle which can be finished only by directly involving its referents, being them either corporations, media apparatuses, or the so-called network 'users'.... Fidel Garcia’s Work. Art As A Complex System

Fidel Garcia (at that time he was still known with his Micro X nickname, by the name of the homonym precinct of the Alamar quarter where he still lives now) has paid me a visit to talk about his work. At that time he was an ISA student (Instituto Superior de Arte, maybe the best school of art in all Latin America) and made part of Tania Bruguera's Catedra Arte de Conducta, the educational project the Cuban artist carried on for almost a decade, by bringing artists, philosophers, activists and curators to Cuba in order to educate and raise a new generation of artists, grown up in the shade of the international panorama of our time.... Notes On Transmediale 2011: Hack:ability And Identity

The last edition of Transmediale, Berlin's festival for new media, welcomed like every year artists, curators, critics, activists and insiders under the enfatic title Response: Ability. In its 2011 edition, Transmediale has dealt with the political implications generated by the technological evolution in progress, with the skills which the hypermedial and overconnected subject should acquire in order to face the new matters that reality sets with urgency.... The “OVNI” Project. Video As A Critical Experience

The 2011 edition of OVNI (Observatory de V'deo no Identificat: Unidentified Video Observatory) is dedicated to the concept of dis-reality. In an age where the show business, too many times mistaken for the culture world, has risen as model of real life, where fiction and reality melt into one solution and where physic and mental solidity dissolve into a constant flow of images and appearances, in this intricate and complex mutation of reality the OVNI work shows itself as an antidote to the poison of contemporary information and communication... Artefact Festival

The Emergence of Things brings together some 20 artists who investigate the fundamental components or "elementary particles" of media, technology and their production processes. Like anatomical surgeons or archaeologists, they dissect our everyday instruments and image production. Some artists approach the theme from the social or political implications of certain 'tools' and the power structures that are interwoven with them.... READ MORE...
