NEW MEDIA ART EDUCATION & RESEARCH
EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ON NEW MEDIA ART
Our reality is constantly more complex and in continuous transformation. Traditional paradigms appear increasingly inadequate and offer ever less help in understanding our world. A syncretic paradigm may offer a way out of the dilemma, that consists of the attempt to reconcile disparate or contradictory normative systems, melding practices
of various schools of thought. Syncretism becomes the concordance of eclectic sources (Wilson 1998, Ascott 2006). The need to forge a new paradigm stems from the need to establish a context of education and research that fits the media world’s current complexity and its speed of change (McLuhan 1953, Toffler 1980, Levy 1992, Leary 1994, Castells, 2000; De Kerckhove, 2001; Himanen, 2001; Gardner, 2007).
Artistic application, with its current syncretic and connective quality, is naturally close to the method of the syncretic paradigm. That is, art in the active sense turns out to be the right tool for discovering a “complex and fast” truth. This tool amounts to a critical method, a method of knowledge and research and suits the new media art world’s contemporary complexity and speed. This New Media Art is subversive as it does not search for a thesis nor does it follow a rigid scientific process. This symposium seeks to demonstrate how these assumptions play out, and at the same time to test a Media Design and New Media Art methodology. The Symposium New Media Art Education & Research aims is to make an overview on the actual situation of the Art and New Media Education and Research. Each speaker will have 14 minutes to present is paper. Is organized by Francesco Monico, NABA, and will take place the 14 april, all day, at FORMA – international Centre for Photography
