Marco Mancuso was called by IED Milan in 2014 to hold the course of “Phenomenology of Contemporary Art” as interdisciplinary class able to include all students coming from schools of Product Design, Media, Graphic Design, Sound Art, Fashion, Communication and Interior Design.
The course is based on a dynamic system of lectures, critical discourses and viewing of footage material aiming at giving the students a wide overview on the production of Media Art and Design with the use of digital technologies, and their impact on contemporary society and culture
The course is mirroring the multifaced, interdisciplinary, fast developing world of contemporary Media Art & Culture and professional creativity for whom no more divisions among artists, designers, coders, makers, professionals survive anymore. The course, indeed, is thought as a meta-journey among some of the most vital and experimental artistic territories, such as internet projects, audiovisual objects, generative graphic animations, sound installations, applied sciences, interactive technologies, hacktivist practices, do it yourself attitudes, hacking codes, open cultures and much more…
The critical discourse shows how in a period of growing economic recession and widespread cuts to cultural funding, the number of examples of cultural and creative subjects and industries involved in the standardization of sustainable development models aimed at activating functional productive processes to realize a “cultural object” is increasing: artists, designers, programmers, authors, hackers, makers, musicians, film-makers, graphic designers; but also companies in the ICT sector of course such as hardware and software producers, or active in such fields as scientific research, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, biomedicine or materials investigation.
Through an extensive and comprehensive overview of the major case studies at national and international level – in which the production of an art and culture object is determined by the close and strategic relationship between the professional (artist, designer, creative), media center, academia and industries ( ICT , science , materials, design , fashion , biotech , medical, robotics) – the students will be able to identify the contemporary scenarios in whichthe contemporary idea of creative industry borns . The idea is to teach how develope the concept of a creative and cultural ecosystem as a competitive and distinctiveness, how elaborate the concept of an oriented Media Art industry in all its strategic , cultural and productive dimension.
